DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
(Probationary Position)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provide day-to-day management of Special Education services and programs in accordance with NYS relations and district procedures.
· Assist in developing and implementing consistent district procedures in accordance with applicable school policies and
procedures.
· Coordinate services on behalf of district students placed in out-of-district programs to assure compliance for SWDs.
· Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of laws and regulations related to the fiscal and programmatic implementation of Special Education programs.
· Exercise sound judgement and appropriate discretion in the administration of professional duties.
· Maintain a CSE caseload and represent the district as necessary in Impartial Hearings and Due Process matters.
· Oversee and manage regular disciplinary change in placement processes to assure due process for students with disabilities and those suspected of disabilities.
· Prepare data reports, data verifications, and presentations for various district officials and the community, as requested by the Assistant Superintendent of Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services.
· Chair/facilitate district-level committees as requested or assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services.
· Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the management team, faculty, and staff, students, and family
community partners, and the Board of Trustees.
· Perform teacher, related services, clerical, and support staff evaluations as assigned.
· Participate in and support budget development and management, including those pertaining to creation and administration of the 611 and 619 grants, in collaboration with the Assistant Superintendent or District Superintendent.
· Organize the Special Education Extended School Year Program
· Coordinate special transportation
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND COMPETENCIES:
· NYS Certification as a School District Administrator (SDA), School District Leader (SDL), or School Administration and
Supervision (SAS).
· NYS Certification in Special Education or related service is required
· Minimum of five years of successful leadership experience in the area of Special Education at District level is strongly
preferred.
· Successful record of service as a Special Education Teacher, School Psychologist, or Related Services Provider required.
· Master’s Degree in Education
· Strong knowledge of all elements in NYS Special Education, including the Part 200 and Part 201 Regulations.
