ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS & SOCIAL STUDIES
POSITION:
The Assistant Director for ELA/SS will oversee the management and direction of the ELA and social studies departments for the district (pre-kindegarten-12th grade). This work will be aligned to the Next Gen state standards, implementation of a guaranteed and viable curriculum with evidence-based instructional practices and system wide professional development across all schools. The Assistant Director will work towards achievement of district objectives aligned to the strategic plan goals with a student and equity-centered approach and lens.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provides leadership in program development in assigned curricular areas, to include design of district curriculum frameworks and assessment tools.
· Identifies and aligns of instructional materials, design of professional development, and long and short-range planning for ongoing, evidence-based improvement.
· Leads curriculum committees through the evaluation of selected program areas, courses of study, & the development of curriculum guides which will provide for a progression of curriculum concepts & instructional skills for the district.
· Supports the development of high quality, effective ELA/SS instruction throughout the district, including observing & coaching ELA and social studies teachers to improve instructional planning, teaching practice, small-group instruction and the use of data, assessment, and instructional technology.
· Performs all other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
· Extensive expertise in curriculum and instruction, curricular design, and professional development design and delivery.
· A deep understanding of content specific and general pedagogy, the New York State Standards for English Language Arts and Social Studies current trends and best practices in curriculum design and instruction
· Training and experience in curriculum development and instructional theory/practices are required; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work and meet certification requirements.
· At least 4-6 years of ELA and/or social studies teaching experience at the elementary and secondary level
· Strong record of helping students achieve academic success, primarily with minority and low-income students
· Experience working with adult learners, coaching teachers, and delivering professional development
· Experience in analyzing data and using results to modify curricula
· Training and, or experience in curriculum development and instructional theory/practices are preferred; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work and meet certification requirements.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
· New York State Certificate in Education Administration (School District Leader)
